It was shock and disbelief as no fewer than 20 worshipers were massacred in a church in Ozubulu, Anambra State in the south east of Nigeria.

Witnesses reported that the gunmen stormed the church in the early hours just as the worshipers were seated in the church for the homily.

The witnesses said the unidentified gunmen had arrived the church in a Lexus Sport Utility Vehicle (SUV) during a 5:45 am morning mass when the unsuspecting congregants were listening to a sermon.

All of a sudden, the witness who spoke on condition of anonymity said, three gunmen disembarked from the SUV and stationed themselves at the three main doors leading to the church auditorium as one of them immediately opened fire shooting the worshipers at a close range.

It was gathered that before the shooting started, the attackers had disconnected the generator supplying electricity to the church to make the place dark and make it impossible for victims to know the direction the attack was coming from.

The Commissioner of Police in charge of Anambra State Garba Umar visited the scene of the attack and

said that preliminary investigations by the police revealed that the attack was carried out by a native of the area.

He said: “From our findings, it is very clear that the person who carried the attack must be an indigene of the area.

“We gathered that worshippers for 6 o’clock Sunday mass at St. Philip Ozobulu were in the service when a gunman dressed in black attire covering his face with a cap entered the church and moved straight to a particular direction and opened fire.

“The man after shooting at his targeted victims still went on a shooting spree, killing and wounding other worshippers.”

ObianoThe Anambra State governor, Chief Willie Obiano described as sacrilege the attack on a church that resulted in the death of over 20 worshipers in the early hours of Sunday in Ozubulu, Ekwusigo Local Government Area of the state.

During his visit to the scene of the incident, the governor who was visibly shocked at such callous act said it was chilling and sacrilege that worshippers at such alarming number would be killed inside a church.

He also told the crowd he addressed that a preliminary investigation into the matter has revealed that the incident is spillover of fracas between two brothers from Ozubulu resident outside the country.

From Ozubulu, Obiano also visited the emergency unit of the Nnamdi Azikiwe Universty Teaching Hospital in the nearby city of Nnewi to see the victims, especially the wounded ones that are receiving medical attention at the hospital.

At the hospital, he thanked the team of medical personnel attending to the victims and assured that.

Some of the victims were brought to the emergency unit of the Nnamdi Azikiwe University Teaching Hospital (NAUTH), Nnewi while others including the dead were taken to other hospitals around Ozubulu.
This is now the task before the police to unravel the persons that ordered the attack, the individuals that carried out the attack and the real motive behind the attack.

Former Governor of Abia State, Dr. Orji Uzor Kalu, has condemned the gun attack on worshipers at a Catholic Church in Ozubulu, Anambra State.
In a signed press statement by his Special Assistant, Mr. Peter Eze, Dr. Kalu said the attack is the worst form of barbarism and uncommon wickedness on South east soil.
He called on both the federal and state governments to get to the root of the attack and ensure that no such terror is visited on worshippers in any part of the country.
According to him, worshippers should be free to worship God without fear of terrorist attacks.
He called that the masterminds of the attack must face the law.

“News of an armed attack on worshipers at St. Philips Catholic Church in Ozubulu in Anambra State hit me with a shock. As I send this, I still am unable to fathom the rationale behind such barbarism and wickedness.

“It is very depressing and no reasons justify such act of terror. It is wrong. It is uncalled for. We do not need further bloodshed in Nigeria.

“I urge the security agencies, federal and state governments and all local security apparatus to ensure that those behind this barbaric act, and their sponsors, are exposed and made to face the full wrath of the law.
From another source, it was gathered that the gunmen actually came to assassinate a Billionaire son of the clan Chief Alloysius Ikegwuonu (a.k.a BISHOP EBUBECHUKWUZO 1 OF OZUBULU) but unfortunately for them they met his absent and they came inside church close to his domain to ransack for him all to no avail, and they start shooting sporadically on the congregation thereby leaving not less than 20 persons dead and numerous were injured including the BISHOP father who was shot on his hand.

This is now the task before the police to unravel the persons that ordered the attack, the individuals that carried out the attack and the real motive behind the attack.
